With the holiday season in full swing, there will be lots of holiday celebrations and parties. Unfortunately, those that imbibe often end up behind the wheel of a vehicle at the end of the night. The Texas Department of Transportation wants to remind people that the best present this year is the gift of a sober ride.
In order to draw attention to the epidemic of drinking and driving, especially during the holiday season, the TxDOT’s Sober Ride Sleigh will be putting in appearances around the state. It’s a limousine that looks like it’s a Christmas present. The “sleigh” will be at several parades, shopping malls and other holiday-related venues to promote sober rides for the holiday season.
According to TxDOT statistics, during the holiday season last year that ran from Dec. 1, 2013, to Jan. 1, 2014, 92 fatalities and 763 serious injuries resulted from 2,367 DUI traffic accidents. That’s actually a decrease from the previous holiday season — an 8.9 percent decrease.
In addition to the Sober Ride Sleigh, TxDOT is partnering with some of largest employers in Texas to get the message out to the masses. TxDOT officials have also set up partnerships with the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission and the Texas Hospitality Association to get literature about sober rides into businesses where alcohol is served. Finally, TxDOT is working with transit authorities in San Antonio, Corpus Christie and Austin to let people know to use the bus as a sober ride home.
Those who have been injured because of a drunk driver do have legal options when it comes to seeking compensation for pain and suffering, lost wages, medical expenses and more. An experienced personal injury attorney can provide more information.
