Dog bites are a relatively common occurrence. Some bites are minor and only need superficial treatment, while other bites can require extensive treatment from healthcare professionals. Most animal owners are conscientious and take the necessary steps to keep their dogs secure to avoid such uncomfortable encounters, but when an unprovoked attack does occur, the consequences can be dire. Our Austin readers will be saddened to read about how it is suspected that a 96-year-old man was killed when he was attacked by a group of dogs in his own yard.
The alleged attack took place in Katy on Aug. 30. The 96-year-old man’s grandson found him on the ground in his yard. The man’s pet Chihuahua was also found dead nearby. A pack of dogs was seen in another yard, attacking another dog. Animal control officers were called to the scene and rounded up six dogs.
According to authorities, bite marks on the elderly man were consistent with a dog attack. The extent of the bites was not released. The owner of the dogs that were rounded up has not been made public, but charges are pending. There is no word on the status of the dogs in question.
This is a tragic example of what can happen if a pet owner is not responsible. It is also possible that the owners were accountable and some other circumstances occurred causing the dogs to be released. However it happened, six dogs are now allegedly responsible for the death of an elderly man, and his family has the right to seek justice in a court of law. Prosecutors will handle any criminal charges that might be filed. The family can also utilize the civil court system and pursue compensation for pain and suffering, loss of companionship and reimbursement for medial and final expenses incurred because of the sad event.
