It is a sad reality that you and your loved ones could encounter a range of different dangerous drivers out on the roads here in the Austin area. This includes drunk drivers. Drunk driving is behind a large number of accidents in Texas. For example, according to the Texas Department of Transportation, there were 24,563 reported alcohol-related crashes in the state in 2016.

You could encounter a drunk driver out on the roads at any time. However, there are certain times of the week and times of the day where the chances of drunk driving crashes are generally much higher. Statistics on alcohol-related crashes in Texas in 2016 give insights on when these times are.

The dangers of the weekend

It may come as little surprise that the weekend is the time of the week that generally sees the most drunk driving accidents. In 2016, nearly 2/3rds of all alcohol-related crashes in the state occurred on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Of the weekend days, Saturday held the top sport for such accidents, seeing a little over 6,000 of them.

Late at night and very early in the morning: Major times for DUI crashes

When it comes to time of day, statistics indicate that, in 2016, DUI crashes were most likely between 10:00 p.m. and 2:59 a.m. Each of the one-hour periods in this stretch saw at least 2,000 alcohol-related accidents that year. No one-hour periods outside of this stretch topped the 2,000 mark. The part of this time-frame that saw the most accidents was its very end, 2:00 a.m. to 2:59 a.m. It saw 2,945 drunk driving crashes.

Being on the lookout for potential drunk drivers

So, during the late night and early morning hours of the weekend, the odds of encountering and getting hit by a drunk driver can be up quite a bit. So, when out driving during these periods, you and your loved ones may want to keep a close watch for behaviors from other drivers that could indicate intoxication. You also may want to be ready to engage in defensive driving in case you come across a drunk driver.

Holding dangerous drivers accountable

Unfortunately, vigilance and defensive driving aren’t always enough to keep people safe from drunk drivers. The conduct of drunk drivers can seriously injure innocent drivers and passengers. If you or a loved one has been hurt by the recklessness of another driver, such as a person who drove drunk, you may want to look into the available legal options for seeking justice and compensation.
