A patrol officer with the Houston Police Department is facing an intoxication manslaughter charge stemming from a fatal crash earlier this month in Fort Bend. The six-year veteran of the HPD's Midwest Division has been released from jail on $100,000 bond and is on paid leave from his job as the HPD conducts its own internal investigation. The officer was off duty early in the morning when the Chevrolet Tahoe he was driving struck a Corvette head-on, according to Fort Bend law enforcement. The 36-year-old Richmond area man driving the Corvette did not survive the crash. He leaves behind an 8-year-old daughter for whom family members have set up a GoFundMe page. Sheriff's deputies who responded to the crash said that the officer smelled like alcohol, but refused to take a field sobriety test. His blood was taken at a hospital after a warrant was obtained. He suffered only minor injuries. The officer, who is due back in court late next month, is required to abide by a number of conditions of his bond. These include: -- No firearms -- No travel outside Fort Bend and surrounding counties -- No communication with the victim's family -- Satellite monitoring -- A camera and ignition interlock device in his vehicle For people in some professions, even a drunk driving charge can have a serious impact on their lives. A conviction can cost them their career, not to mention jail time, fines and other penalties. Anyone facing a DUI charge needs to take it seriously and seek the help of an experienced Texas criminal defense attorney who can work to protect his or her rights and mitigate the consequences on his or her lives.
