Is Texas the most dangerous state when it comes drunk driving? No, but there is certainly room for improvement. In fact, according to a recent study conducted by CarInsuranceComparison.com, Texas is tied with Hawaii as the 14th most dangerous state in the country for drunk driving - meaning 35 states and the District of Columbia rank as safer.

Details of the report

This particular study relied upon statistics compiled from a variety of sources - including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the FBI and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), among others - and ranked the states based on upon five distinct factors:

  • Drunk driving arrests per 1,000,000 population
  • Percentage of fatal crashes involving alcohol
  • Cost per drunk driving fatality
  • Severity of drunk driving penalties when compared to national average
  • Laws in place to fight drunk driving

While Texas ranks 14th overall, the state's performance in some of the specific categories is quite worse. For instance, it is the 6th worst state for alcohol-related fatalities. In addition, when it comes to the types of laws and statutes in place to fight drunk driving, only three states are worse than Texas, according to the study. This study makes one thing quite clear: There is still much to be done in order to make the roadways safer in the Lone Star State. However, if you or a loved one has already been injured by a drunk driver, it is important to remember that you may have legal options available. This is why you should always consult with an experienced attorney as soon as possible after seeking medical treatment.
