A tragic pedestrian accident has claimed the life of a University of Houston student. The accident happened in late April and the young man died a day later. He and his girlfriend were walking when they were violently struck by an alleged drunk driver. The crash occurred early on a Friday morning while the young man and his girlfriend were walking along the sidewalk. That is when a passing pickup truck collided another car, went off the roadway and struck both of them. The couple were rushed to a local hospital but doctors were unable to save the young man and he later succumbed to his injuries. The deceased man was enrolled in a construction management program at UH and he was a sophomore. He was also a brother in the Kappa Alpha fraternity and was employed at the River Oaks Country Club. The couple had been dating since November. The young man's death has sent shock waves of grief across social media. A Facebook friend wrote on the man's wall that his life had been cut short due to an imbecile's decision to drink and drive. Friends also posted messages to the man's Twitter account. After the crash, the 23-year-old man who police deemed was responsible for the tragic collision was arrested and taken into custody. He has been charged with felony and intoxicated assault. The arrested man is also a student at the University of Houston like the victims. Police say that the young man attempted to pass another driver who was trying to make a left-hand turn and ended up slamming into the front end of that vehicle. As a result of the impact, he lost control of his vehicle and struck the two pedestrians. Police have set his bail at $30,000. Family members of people killed by drunk drivers in Texas will have the law on their side when it comes to seeking justice and restitution in civil court for wrongful death damages. In addition, the results of criminal court proceedings against drunk drivers in such cases can be used to bolster the litigation of such wrongful death claims.
