Riding a motorcycle is something that many people can't imagine not doing. It's their love of the open road and the wind in their faces that has them hooked. Unfortunately, there is little protection for motorcyclists involved in a crash. Because of this, you need to do whatever you can to avoid accidents. Here are some tips for riding in city traffic. -- Realize that you are invisible: While this isn't technically true, many motorists who hit a motorcycle will say, "I didn't see it!" Do whatever you can to make yourself more visible, including wearing reflective clothing, weaving your bike and ensuring your headlight is lit. -- Positioning is important: Avoid riding right next to cars. It's better to always be in their line of vision. Keep out of their blind spots. -- Keep an escape lane: If you don't know that traffic stopped in front of you, you need to be able to swerve out of the way to avoid hitting another vehicle. -- Know what happens around you: You should be aware of what is happening around you and down the road. -- Maintain a safe distance: Keep a safe following distance between you and the car in front of you. This will give you time to react if the vehicle suddenly slows or stops. -- Watch out for left-hand turns: When vehicles pull out in front of you and make a left-hand turn, they are more likely not to notice you than if they made a right-hand turn. Always watch what is happening in intersections ahead of you and know where you will go if a vehicle pulls out in front of you. Putting these tips to use can help you avoid accidents. Unfortunately, motorcycle accidents will still happen. If you are injured because of another driver while on a motorcycle, you have a right to seek compensation for your medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering and much more. An Austin lawyer can give you more information on how to do so. Source:, "Survival Tips for Riding in City Traffic," Domingo Chang, accessed Feb. 26, 2016
