Even if you feel the dog bite you suffered is relatively minor, it's very important that you receive treatment. You can care for some bites at home; however, if you don't know the dog, if you can't stop the bleeding or there are signs of infection, then it's very important to seek the appropriate medical care. When treating a dog bite at home, you should first concentrate on stopping the bleeding. You can do so by placing a clean towel on the bite and keeping the area where the bite is located elevated. The bite should be carefully washed with soap and water and covered with a sterile bandage. Each day, antibiotic cream should be applied in order to prevent the bite from becoming infected. If the bite requires a physician's care, you should be ready to answer some questions. These might include whether or not you know who owns the dog and if it has had its shots. Stitches may be required for some dog bites and deep bites may even require that the victim has plastic surgery to address scarring. If the dog is not current on its rabies vaccination, you may end up getting the vaccine yourself. In addition, a tetanus shot should be given if you aren't up to date. Antibiotics may be prescribed in order to keep the bite from being infected and if you had stitches, you'll need to return to the doctor to have them removed. Dog bites can be very severe and cause massive damage to victims, especially children. If you or a loved one have suffered a dog bite because of the owner's negligence, an attorney can help you seek compensation through a civil lawsuit in Texas.
