The number of fatal accidents involving alcohol has risen by almost 19 percent in the last five years. From 2011 to 2015, the number jumped from 53 to 63.

One woman whose 20-year-old daughter was killed by a drunk driver wears a button with her daughter's face on it almost every day. The mother said, "I want the people to know that my baby's just not a case number. I just like having her close to my heart."

While the drunk driver who killed the woman's daughter was arrested, the mother says that there needs to be more done to prevent this dangerous activity. It's left a hole in her heart that will never be filled. There are some programs that the Texas Department of Public Safety uses to tell the public of the dangers of drinking and driving. For example, a Texas state trooper will come to school or work and talk about preventing drunk driving.

In Travis County, Texas, last year, 30 percent of crashes involved alcohol. Some of the surrounding counties were even higher. In Hays County, 41 percent of crashes involved alcohol. In Williamson County, 30.95 percent of crashes involved alcohol.

Texas had the highest number of drunk driving fatalities of any state in the U.S., in 2013. While lawmakers are trying to determine how to prevent drunk driving, law enforcement is working harder than ever to locate and arrest drunk drivers.

If you or a loved one were injured in a drunk driving accident, you have a right to seek compensation for your injuries. An experienced attorney can provide more information on how to proceed with a civil lawsuit against those responsible for the accident.
