Last year's South By Southwest festival is not a fun memory for many people. Instead, those who remember it also remember losing loved ones and friends or suffering injuries themselves.

In March last year, a 23-year-old man was allegedly drunk when he sped up and struck several people in a crowd who were attending the festival. Four people died from their injuries and more than 20 others were injured. The man allegedly fled police before the crash, driving down a street that was closed and into the crowd.

The man has now pleaded not guilty to the extremely serious charges he is facing. Those include capital murder, murder and aggravated assault. He continues to be held on a $5.5 million bond.

Those who lost family members or who were injured deserve compensation. There does not have to be a conviction on the criminal charges for a civil suit to proceed. There could be several civil suits that arise from this accident, including those for wrongful death and personal injury.

While a lawsuit judgment in favor of the plaintiffs won't bring back a lost loved one or undo the injuries of the survivors, it can help those who are struggling financially as a result of the accident. An attorney who is experienced in personal injury and wrongful death cases can explain how such a case would proceed through the civil court system.

Attorneys can help you determine what claims you might make in the lawsuit, such as medical expenses, funeral expenses, lost wages, loss of companionship and more. Your personal injury or wrongful death attorney will be a valuable asset in your case.
