It probably comes as little surprise that slip-and-fall accidents involving older adults can lead to extremely serious injuries or even death. However, did you know how common such accidents really are? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three adults who are 65 years old or older fall each year. Here are some more statistics about older adults and slip-and-fall accidents:

  • Twenty to 30 percent of senior citizens who fall each year suffer injuries that are moderate to serious in nature.
  • Falls result in hospitalizations for older adults five times more often than hospitalizations for other causes.
  • Emergency rooms treated 2.4 million older adults in 2011 for injuries related to a fall. Over 689,000 of those injured were admitted to the hospital.
  • In 2000, 78 percent of older adult deaths due to fall injuries were because of lower body extremity injuries and traumatic brain injuries.
  • In the same year, 28 percent of older adult deaths were due to internal injuries suffered in a fall.
  • The most common injuries are fractures, accounting for a little more than one-third of all injuries that were not fatal.
  • Hip fractures are the most serious of all fractures related to falls for older adults.

As you can see, it can be very dangerous for older adults to suffer a slip-and-fall accident. In addition, the medical costs can be very high.
