Labor Day weekend dangers: drunk drivers

When a holiday approaches, there are often articles and blogs that highlight the potential for people to be stopped for police for drinking and driving. After all, the police are generally out in greater numbers. However, the cost of a DUI is much less than the cost of a human life taken in a drunk driving accident.

The Texas Department of Transportation reports that a motor vehicle accident involving a drunk driving happens about every 20 minutes. In 2013, 16 people lost their lives in drunk driving accidents over the holiday weekend. In 2014, 1,041 people lost their lives because of drunk drivers. This doesn't even touch on the number of people whose lives were changed because of serious injuries suffered in drunk driving accidents.

When someone is injured in an accident involving a DUI, he or she may be entitled to seek compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, mental trauma, lost wages and more. While a criminal conviction can be used as evidence in a civil case, it's not a requirement to file the civil lawsuit.

For those that have lost a loved in an accident involving a drunk driver, a wrongful death lawsuit may be filed by the executor of the victim's estate. Damages sought may include loss of companionship, loss of earning potential, loss of consortium and more. While money cannot bring back a loved one, it can help the family to deal with the financial implications of the accident.

An attorney who is experienced in seeking compensation for clients who have been affected by a drunk driver can provide you with additional information on the process.
