Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

The month of May has been designated as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. This is the perfect time for it, too, as many motorcyclists will be on the roads this summer in Texas. Unfortunately, some motorists don't look out for motorcycles on the roads, and this can pose a significant risk to riders. "Share the Road with Motorcyclists" is a motorcycle safety campaign designed to remind drivers that motorcyclists have the same privileges and rights as other motorists. Drivers need to be extra vigilant when making left turns, changing lanes and proceeding through stop signs. Meanwhile, motorcyclists need to do all they can to make sure that they stand out and are visible to other drivers. In 2012, 4,957 motorcyclists were killed, which is an increase of 7 percent over the previous year. Helmet use remained at about 60 percent in 2013, which is the same as it was in 2012. Even though many motorcyclists don't like to wear helmets, it is a myth that they interfere with a rider's hearing or vision. Drunk driving is dangerous to both the intoxicated individual and other drivers. Motorcyclists don't have the protection around them that other motorists do. All motorists, including motorcyclists, need to avoid drinking and driving, as the results can be tragic. As the month of May passes, all motorists need to take a moment to think about motorcyclists on our roadways and remember to look closely for them while driving. Those who are injured in a motorcycle crash that occurred because of a drunk, distracted or otherwise impaired driver do have a right to seek compensation. Claims may be made for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and much more.
