Driving under the influence of alcohol remains a major problem in Texas, as well as other states throughout the country. Even though law enforcement agencies are doing their best to decrease the number of drunk drivers on the road, it is an uphill battle. The reason for this is simple: it is entirely too easy for a person to drink and drive. Most people understand the seriousness of drinking and driving. They realize this can get them in trouble with the law. They also realize it increases the chance of being involved in an accident. Here are some drunk driving statistics, compiled by Mothers Against Drunk Driving, that show just how widespread this remains: -- The average drunk driver has driven intoxicated approximately 80 times before being arrested. -- A person is injured in a drunk driving related accident in the United States every two minutes. -- Drunk driving costs the country nearly $200 billion a year. -- On average, 66 percent of people will be involved in a drunk driving accident at some point in their life. -- In 2012 alone, more than 29 million people admitted to drinking and driving. These drunk driving statistics prove that this problem is very real. Not only does it impact the person who is caught drinking and driving, but it can cause an accident that results in injury or death. The best way to decrease the impact of drunk driving is for every last person to fight the urge to get behind the wheel after having too much to drink. Unfortunately, this is an uphill battle. For this reason, there will continue to be accidents that harm innocent people, forcing them to change their life forever.
