A horrific crash that took place on Jan. 14 in West Texas took the lives of two prison guards and eight prisoners. The bus was traveling down Interstate 20 when an icy spot caused the bus to go off the roadway.

The prison bus then slid down an embankment and crashed into a freight train . According to authorities, the prisoners were handcuffed in sets of two. They were also not secured in the bus with seat belts.

The crash ejected some of the accident victims. Besides those who were killed, one prison guard and four prisoners were injured. Four of those injured are listed in critical condition, including a prison guard. There were no injuries reported on the train.

The National Transportation Safety Board has investigators at the bus accidentscene. They hope to determine who was at fault. There was another accident on an overpass on Interstate 20 that might have contributed in some way to the this crash, according to investigators. However, if the driver of the bus was distracted, fell asleep or was impaired, this will certainly affect liability claims.

One of the fire battalion chiefs at the accident scene said this crash was as awful as anything he has seen. He has spent 32 years as a firefighter.

The deceased prisoners ranged in age from 22 to 44 years old. The two prison guards who were killed were 53 and 45 years old. The injured prison guard is 38 years old.

The families of those who were killed and the victims who were injured may be able to seek compensation for their losses. These losses can include loss of earnings, pain and suffering, mental anguish, loss of companionship and more. Source: keyetv.com, "10 Killed in West Texas Prison Bus Crash Identified" Jan. 14, 2015
