According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 4.5 million people suffer from dog bites each year. Around 885,000 of those who suffer a bite need medical care. While people who have dogs in their homes are the most likely to suffer a bite, there are other victims of dog bites. An 8-year-old girl was attacked by two pit bulls -- the same animals she was helping another child look for. A Nacogdoches County deputy reported that the dogs were in the backyard when they managed to get out through a hole in the fence. The two children went different ways in search of the dogs. The two dogs ran up to her and began to jump on her. The girl ran from the dogs and in doing so, fell. The dogs then attacked the young child. An elderly woman heard the dogs attacking the child and ran out to help. She laid down on top of the girl in the hope of protecting her. Unfortunately, the two dogs then attacked the woman and still attacked the girl. It took yet another person with a baseball bat to drive the dogs away. Both victims were transported to a local hospital and are now listed in stable condition. The dogs have been surrendered to the sheriff's office and will be put down. It is not known if the owner will face charges for the unprovoked attack. It seems that reports of dog bites occur very frequently, with some victims even receiving fatal wounds. Those who are injured due to another person's negligence in controlling his or her dogs have a right to pursue compensation for medical bills, emotional distress, scarring or disfigurement, pain and suffering and more.
