A 38-year-old woman was allegedly drunk when the SUV she was driving blew through a red light and smashed into a small car. As a result of the accident, a 16-year-old and a 12-year-old were killed. They were sisters. The fatal crash happened in east Tulsa, Oklahoma, just after 11 p.m., on Aug. 9. According to a corporal with the Tulsa Police Department, the crash happened at the Highway 169 bridge and the 21st Street. Five people were inside the small car: the driver, an 18-year-old male, his 16-year-old girlfriend, their 8-month-old child and the two sisters. The baby and the two sisters were in the back seat of the vehicle, and all were ejected from the vehicle. The baby suffered a serious head injury but is considered to be in stable condition. The child's mother suffered many injuries, including a punctured lung, a concussion and a broken tailbone. The child's father suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The SUV driver was arrested at the scene. Witnesses told police that there was a passenger in her vehicle but he ran from the scene. Police have yet to identify the passenger. The driver is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol injury accident, two counts of first-degree manslaughter, obstructing an officer and driving with a suspended or revoked license, as well as other traffic offenses. In addition, police said that the woman had several warrants. Victims of car accidents caused by impaired drivers have recourse in civil court. A lawsuit may be filed against the at-fault party for claims of pain and suffering, medical expenses, emotional trauma and more. Family members of those who perish because of such accidents may sue for funeral expenses, loss of companionship and other damages.
