With school out for the summer, Texas children and their parents need to be more aware of dangerous dogs. A bicycle ride turned into a hospital visit for a young girl after she was attacked by a Great Dane near River Plantation. The incident resulted in injuries to her shoulder and right arm. The Great Dane was quarantined after the June 16 attack, which left the 8-year-old girl hospitalized. The girl is now recovering from the dog bite and is expected to survive. The owner of the dog was cited for failure to vaccinate the dog against rabies and properly confine it. Animal Control could issue a warrant if the dog is determined to be dangerous. Authorities are still investigating the incident. Children should be able to play without fear of being attacked by dogs. When a dog attacks a person and causes serious injuries, the victim may be able to file an animal bite claim and sue the dog owner for damages. Dog owners have a responsibility to keep their dogs on their own property. A loose dog -- even a typically friendly one -- can suddenly attack a person without cause. This is why proper confinement is necessary. When a dog attack occurs, the dog owner is typically the one who faces liability. He or she could be forced to compensate the victim for medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. If the victim suffers from scarring or disfigurement, he or she could be compensated for those damages as well.
