A Texas toddler is dead and an elementary-aged child has suffered serious injuries after a dog attack in Killeen, Texas. The incident occurred on March 1, as an 18-year-old man was walking with the 2-year-old boy and 8-year old girl near the Iduma Elementary School playground. Officials say that the victims were subject to an unprovoked attack when a large bull mastiff ran out of a nearby residential garage. The dog reportedly first attacked the 8-year-old child, but it was eventually pried from that child. Then, the dog accosted the 2-year-old. Eventually, a weapon was fired by a bystander, which caused the frightened dog to run back into the garage. Authorities report that the 8-year-old child is currently in stable condition. The toddler was declared dead about 30 minutes after the attack after being transported to the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center. The dog has been taken into custody by Killeen Animal Control, but it is not yet clear whether the owner will face criminal charges. This attack is the third to occur in Central Texas in the new year. A 2-year-old child also died in mid-February after a vicious dog attack. A 6-year-old girl was also hospitalized shortly before that incident; in that case, the dog was shot and killed by a Killeen police officer. Family members of these two victims may be entitled to financial compensation for medical costs and a variety of other civil claims. No one should endure losing a child because of an irresponsible pet owner. A Texas personal injury attorney may be able to provide assistance for such victims, pursuing compensation for pain and suffering, loss of companionship, medical expenses and several other civil allegations.
