A 19-year-old Texas woman has been accused of killing a Houston man and seriously injuring his wife during an alleged drunk driving crash. The at-fault driver reportedly struck the victims' motorcycle as they were celebrating Mardi Gras in Galveston on Feb. 22. Authorities report that the driver smashed into the victims' motorcycle as she exited a gas station parking lot along Seawall Boulevard in that Texas town. The young woman is facing allegations of intoxication assault and manslaughter, and she was transported to the Galveston County Jail. The male victim, a 61-year-old retired police officer, suffered catastrophic injuries in the wreck and died after the collision. That man's wife, age 52, is an active-duty police officer with the Houston Police Department. She suffered serious injuries after being struck. The pair had reportedly been attending the Mardi Gras celebration with other police officers who are members of a motorcycle group. The married couple and their relatives have been a fixture at the Houston Police Department for years. The male victim's brother is also an active-duty officer. The female victim has worked with the department for 27 years in the first-responder unit, according to local news reports. The family is known for its involvement in charitable work to provide assistance for officers who are hurt on the job. Reports show that the couple's adult son, a military member, has returned from his duty station to stay with his mother, who is still in critical condition. Victims whose relatives have been affected by a fatal motorcycle crash may benefit from consulting a Texas personal injury attorney. Drunk drivers and negligent drivers do not have the right to take victims' lives without some form of justice. A personal injury attorney may be able to help victims recover damages from the negligent party for pain and suffering, permanent disability and a variety of other civil claims.
