An 18-year-old driver who ran a stop sign is allegedly to blame for a fatal crash near the Texas Motor Speedway that killed one man and sent several other victims to the hospital. Authorities report that the fatal crash occurred on Highway 114 when a Dodge sedan plowed into the side of a Honda in which a family was riding. The Honda flipped over because of the impact, sending the vehicle skidding into a ditch. The 47-year-old man that was killed was the father of the children in the vehicle; it appears that his wife and two younger victims survived, but their conditions were reported as serious. One of the children, about 8 years old, was flown to a nearby children's hospital in critical condition. An older teenage child was transported to the same facility by ambulance. Police officers say that charges have not yet been filed in connection with the Jan. 19 crash, but the teenage driver may still face criminal penalties. Investigators allege that the negligent driver plowed through a stop sign and then accelerated through an intersection before striking the family vehicle. Authorities have not said whether distraction or drunk driving may have played a role in this car collision. Officials say they are concerned about the mental welfare of the firefighters, officers and medical professionals dealt with the accident victims and their care afterwards. In many cases, those responders suffer emotional distress after managing an emergency scene that involves kids. Those officials would also be wise to worry about the welfare of the victims themselves, as they will likely also suffer from emotional trauma after the accident. The decedent's relatives in this case may be able to recover financial damages from the negligent driver who struck their vehicle. That driver could be responsible for civil claims even if he is never charged with a crime. Compensation from a civil personal injury suit may include funds for pain and suffering, medical costs, emotional distress, loss of companionship and a wide variety of other claims.
