A young mother is still in critical condition after a pedestrian accident in Tyler. Her 3-week-old baby girl was also injured but was recently released from a hospital in Dallas. The accident happened during the late daylight hours of July 27, and police said the investigation would include looking at the driver's cellphone records to determine if texting or talking on the phone may have been a factor in the collision. It was reported that the 20-year-old mother was crossing Old Bullard Road with her baby when the accident happened. The young woman was not using a crosswalk, but witnesses said there was still enough light that the driver of the car could have seen the pedestrian. Authorities indicated that the 40-year-old driver did not appear to be intoxicated, and the investigation is ongoing. Incidentally, an outdoor party for a local business was underway near the site of the accident, so it could be worth investigating whether or not the party distracted the driver. The exact nature of the infant's or the mother's injuries was not disclosed in a KLTV report, though the family is undoubtedly relieved to have the child back home. The mother's injuries are obviously serious, though there was no report as whether any surgeries were needed. Pedestrian accidents happen all too often in Texas, and injured parties or their families need to be aware of their options for holding negligent drivers accountable. Cities and towns throughout Texas lack adequate crosswalks, making crossing the street in dangerous places an unfortunate necessity for pedestrians. The problem should result in drivers being more cautious, but too often that simply isn't the case. Source: KLTV, "Infant struck by car released from Dallas hospital," Whitley Walden, Aug. 2, 2013
