A 19-year-old Ferris, Texas, woman is dead after an alleged drunk driver crashed into her vehicle as she sat on the shoulder of Interstate 45 in Hutchins, Texas. According to reports, the vehicle had its flashers on, and the woman had not even unbuckled her seat belt when the accident occurred.

The 24-year-old driver who struck the woman’s vehicle has been charged in connection with the accident. He is facing intoxication manslaughter charges. The man is not in custody, as he posted a $50,000 bond. He reportedly does not have a criminal history.

The woman leaves behind a 1-year-old son, whom she recently left a Facebook post about that said, “I will love and support you until my last breath.” The family has experienced loss before. Several years ago, the woman’s older brother was killed in a car accident.

When a loved one is killed in a car accident that was due to the negligence or recklessness of someone else, the pain and loss that is felt is likely magnified. There are many things to consider, especially when a child is left without a parent. There may be difficulties paying for the victim’s final expenses, not to mention the ongoing financial needs of the remaining family members.

Surviving family members do have recourse through civil court. A lawsuit can be filed against the at-fault driver. The claims might include those for medical and final expenses, loss of companionship, emotional distress and more. If you have lost a loved one, the advice of an experienced personal injury attorney can help and allow you to begin to put the pieces of your life back together again.
