When a driver is impaired, he or she can cause a serious vehicle accident. In some cases, driver recklessness can lead to the death or serious injury of multiple people. A teenage driver in Texas was involved in an accident that killed five people and injured several others.
According to reports, the 16-year-old driver was operating a pickup truck that was carrying seven other teenagers. Two of those individuals were riding in the bed of the truck. The truck belonged to a company owned by the boy’s family. According to reports, the boy’s blood alcohol level was over three times the legal limit at the time.
At approximately 11:45 p.m. on the night of the accident, the pickup truck driven by the 16-year-old boy collided with an SUV that was stopped on the side of the road. There were several people around the SUV at the time, and the truck hit at least three pedestrians.
The truck driven by the 16-year-old then went on to hit another parked truck. That truck belonged to a youth minister who had stopped to help the stranded motorists in the SUV. The youth minister and several others were killed. A teenage boy in the youth minister’s truck was one of several who were seriously injured. It is that boy’s parents who have filed the sixth lawsuit in this case.
In most of the suits, the 16-year-old boy, his parents and his parents company are being named as defendants. The 16-year-old driver was sentenced to therapy and 10-years probation following the incident. As injured parties or grieving loved ones come to terms with loss and investigation options, additional suits may be filed in this tragic case.
Civil lawsuits for personal injury are one way that car accident victims and their families can seek compensation. An experienced personal injury attorney can help these people decide the best courses of action for their cases.
